DIY Chevron Earrings

You know that chevron pattern that everyone is drooling over lately? .. Yah, well count me in as one of the "droolers" cause I'm loving it too! I see beautiful painted rug makeovers using that pattern and I so want to try it too. Well, after seeing this earring makeover using the chevron design I was, of course, inspired :) So I made my own. But I didn't have earrings that I could makeover, so I just made round discs out of frozen pizza boxes {we pretty much always have a frozen pizza or two in the freezer here!}. I traced a 2 liter soda bottle lid onto cardboard, and cut out 4 circles. Why 4 circles? Well, to make the earring sturdier, I modpodged two pieces together for each one. Make sense? Ya okay. {At first I made the circles onto paint chips, but because those were too thin it didn't work out, I'll tell you why in a second}. Then I got out some of my stickers and found a blank white spot on the sheet where I could draw {trace from my computer screen of a google image} the chevron design and cut it out. The picture below explains what I mean. You see?

So see, it becomes a stencil. Pretend the paint chip circles are actually the cut up pizza boxes that I mentioned before {these photos are from the first ones I tried out that failed, but the instructions still apply}

Put the stickers on one earring at a time, cause the longer the sticker sits on the circle it will get stuck and then when you go to remove it after painting over it not all of the sticker comes off. Yah, that happened the first time. So do one earring at a time. Before I applied my little homemade stickers I touched the sticky backing several times to lessen the stickiness so it would be easier peeling off.
Then I painted my circles with acrylic paint :) I used a cheapo sponge brush. I peeled the stickers off right when I was done! And let them dry.

Then... {I don't have anymore pictures of the process} I took my Modpodge Dimensional Magic glue and covered the top of the circles completely and let it dry for several hours. When that was hardened I added another layer of the dimensional magic and let that dry. {because the first ones I did on paint chips were so thin, the circles curled upwards and when I tried to bend them straight all the dimensional glue cracked- that's why I used the 2 layers of pizza box}. I also put a layer of it on the backs of circles as well.

A few days later {ya, sometimes I'm such a procrastinator about finishing my crafts..} I finished them!
I poked holes in the tops of the circles with a thumb tack. Worked great! Then I added my earrings gadgets and...

I have me some new fun summer earrings!

I like them! I like them! :)
I picked up some paint chips in fun colors while at a store today, so I'm planning on experimenting to find some easier and better ways to make more of these!

What do you think?

  2. I actually glued the two piece of pizza box together before I cut the circles from them.. I forgot to mention that int he post. And the mod podge dimensional magic glue helps to make the sides even and smooth.

  7. Maybe you could adhere the paint chip to the piazza box to make it sturdier, and still have the Colorado without having to paint. Also, you could just leave the stickers on, couldn't you? SUPER CUTE
