I got me a SEWING MACHINE!!

Monday, May 30, 2011

I've been whining for awhile now about wanting a sewing machine so I could join in on the fun I see all around blog land! There are "sew" many sweet ideas I come across and I'm dying to try them myself! Well, I got this one for $25 off Kijiji from a sweet lady.. whose neighborhood is infested with mosquitoes! By the way, she was just finishing up with dinner (pot roast to be exact) and I really wished we could have eaten over for dinner it smelled that good! haha! All it pretty much needs is a little cleaning and a new lightbulb and I think it's good to go! I'm so excited! Not sure what I'll experiment with first! There are always clothing refashioning ideas I run into and want to try with some of my own boring clothing items.. but I just got rid of a big bag of all the clothes I don't wear or am I tired of! hahaha.. oh well!

Wahoooo for my new sewing machine! :)

Vintage Pyrex Mixing Bowls!!

Sunday, February 13, 2011

After a year and four months of being married, I now, as of tonight, have my very own set of mixing bowls! Thursday I was browsing through the adds on Kijiji.ca and came across a set of 3 vintage Pyrex mixing bowls for $15. Oh boy was I excited! .. but then, I figured they had most likely been sold already.. because adorable vintage bowls just seem to be the rave these days. But I sent an email to the seller anyway. .. Well against my doubts, they had not been sold, and she was even willing to hold them for me {for TWO DAYS} until I could come get them! .. I almost died! How sweet of her! {usually people say "first come first serve"} Then she sent me another email including a photo of two larger bowls that matched right along with the other three, .. just in case I was interested in these too {for another $15}!!! Are you kidding me?!?!?! I love you!!!!! .. okay, that wasn't exactly my reply to her, but it was something close to it!! Anyway, I'll just shut up now and show you the bowls! Who really wants to sit here and listen {er.. read..} my blabbing anyway!?!

EEEK!
I loveth them dearly!

{what's that big ole stack of books doing on my kitchen table?!...
oh yah, my Hubs is preaching tomorrow night so he's been preppin' away for his sermon in Philippians!}

Sigh...
I need to take a break from all this giddiness!

DIY cake stand

Friday, January 7, 2011

With a .50 cent plate from the thrift store
and a .25 cent candlestick
I made this super cute little cake stand
{or candy stand!}

I used Gorilla glue to attach the two pieces, and left them overnight to dry.
{like my huge candle?? My Hubby gave me that for Christmas! ... and I'm pretty sure that candle has ended up in quite a few photos of my recent projects!!)

And there you have it,
my .75 cent cake stand!

quick and easy peasy

Cheese Dome Makeover

Finally I've found my very own cheese dome, and for only $3 at my local thrift shop! I've been wanting one of these little cuties since seeing so many cute makeovers of them on blog land.

Ugh, some people might like the look of this, but I really don't. I'm not all about the wine and such. ... And that little leafy knob?? Oh boy.. that's so being replaced! The lid is made of plastic.. wish it was glass, but I still like it!

The bottom round base is like a heavy ceramic or stone material and the artwork is like etched or engraved into it then painted.

There's a glass bottom that fits down on top of the engraved/etched artwork
(there was also a clear plastic protective piece sitting on top of the glass, but I just threw that away)

I also picked up this .50 cent glass candle holder at the thrift to use as a stand for my dome

SO I decided to spray paint the bottom of the cheese dome black. I used Krylon spray paint that bonds to plastic, glass, metal, ceramic.. etc. It's kind of neat how the artwork looks after painted

At first I thought I would mod podge some scrapbook paper or fabric to the bottom, but after painting it I just decided to not do anything permanent to the bottom. So I just cut a piece of fabric to fit the bottom and put the glass back on top. That way I can change the bottom out whenever I want, or leave it just like the above picture.

I also went to the hardware store to find a new knob!
.. painted the knob black

Then out came the Gorilla glue.
I glued the candle holder to the cheese dome base and stacked some heavy things on top to make sure the glue would secure well.

After letting the glue sit over night like this, the cheese dome makeover is finally done!

I like it how it turned out!
These are the colors I want for our bedroom eventually.. so, hmm.. it might sometime find its way in our room! Not sure still what to do with it yet!.. or what to put in it! haha! For now it will hold my one apple :)

One more before photo..

the NEW look is much better!

Man, have I really been in the "makeover" mood lately. I'm wanting to redo all sorts of furniture pieces we have in our place, but not able to start just yet.. so this little cheese dome project was an alright fix for my crazy mood.

Recent Thrift Finds

Have I mentioned my love for thrift shopping? Mostly likely I have! I really enjoy it and I find so many cute things for cheaper! Doubt I'll ever let anyone persuade me that thrifting is just not cool.
I thought I'd share a few of my fun recent finds.

Cheese dome for $3.00
I've see so many adorable makeovers on these things so I thought I'd snatch it up and see what I could do to it. (I actually just did the makeover on it last night, so I'll post that later on)

Pretty little dish for $1.00
Not sure if this dish style has a particular name, but I have seen them floating around blog land as something treasure-like. But I thought it was too cute to pass up for a buck.

Casserole dish $2.50
YES! This is something I've been needing! We didn't have any little dish with a lid like this that can go in the oven. It made me so happy to find this for so cheap. It's cute too :)

Salt and Pepper shakers $0.50!!
Aren't they cuuuute?! We already have on set of shakers, but I just love the look of these ones toooo! Is it so bad to have two sets??

Vase $0.99
Love the yellow color of this vase!

Little dishes $0.50 each
I'm a sucker for cute little dishes! Perfect for candies at a side table, nuts, or condiments at the dinner table.. whatever! Ooh, or maybe even a soap dish!

Hanging baskets $1.99
A few weeks ago I mentioned how I'd kind of like one of these in my kitchen, then I ran into one just a few days ago! Right now it's hanging on a nail on the side of my pantry, but I want it to hang from the ceiling to the right of my sink and cabinets. I want to keep pot holders and oven gloves in it to make more space in my little drawer. Fruit would be cute too.. or onions, garlic..

Huge book $1.00
Thought Hubby would enjoy reading through this one. I first noticed and grabbed the book for its size and look, because I'd like to start using interesting looking books for decor. I think it will be fitting for both reading and decor!

I heart thrift shopping!

Recent finds

Thursday, July 22, 2010

Last week I went with a friend to Regina {a city in Saskatchewan) to do some shopping. She was going for grocery shopping but I was more excited about hitting the big thrift store after the groceries! I found some really cute shirts and so.. I bought them! The prices weren't super cheap, but still a ton better than if I had bought them brand new. Anyway, here they are.

I was sooo happy when I found the white shirt because I don't have a nice white shirt other than a t-shirt. It's really comfy too.

The long sleeved grey shirt is so pretty! I just have to find something right to wear with it. It doesn't have buttons, it's just one of those open hangy shirts. The shoulder seems confuse me a bit, but I think those seems are supposed to be showing in the front. Weird.
The black sweater (with a hood) was actually $2 brand new at a clothing department store! Wa-hooooo! I love clearance racks!!

So far I've worn everything but the grey long sleeved shirt.

These are the only ones I took pictures of me in. I think the blue striped one is my favorite.

I also found a spice rack that I've been wanting for a long time!
It was $1.99!!!!!! I just HAD to get it. The dollar store sells the empty glass spice bottles. I'd like to paint it and get the spice jars, but I think I'll wait till I'm back home in New Brunswick to finish it. .. I've done too much shopping and collecting of things out here in Saskatchewan that we're going to have to send a box of stuff back home!

And here's a cool picture frame I found. There were 6 of them total, but they were $3.99 each! So I thought, " Uuum.. I think I can make do with just one." There isn't even a backing. Oh well. I can't wait to go home and find an idea to do with this.

.. here's so you can kind of tell the size. .. and also notice that I'm a nerd.

Yeah for thrift stores!

Some fun finds

Friday, June 25, 2010

Last week my friend and I went garage sale hunting. She found all the garage sales in the city listed online, printed out the addresses, then we all loaded up in her van on our search for treasures! ... Did I forget to mention she brought her three little munchkins with us? Yah, they were happy with the whole garage sale idea until they realized that spending their $2 coin goes by VERY quick. Even with unhappy children in the back seats, we pressed on to house after house, coming back to fill the van with fun stuff! I thought I would share my finds with you, and there are some I might even ask suggestions for!

Here's a cute little mirror I found for 25 cents! It's about 2 feet tall. The color is a little ugly to me so I want to paint it. Not sure what color though.. Anyone got any really cool suggestions on what to do with this??? The mirror comes out just like a picture frame, so it will be easy to paint it.

here's a closeup for details.. and my husband's knee!

I LOVE big glass jars! This was $2 and I knew it wanted me. I want to paint the wooden lid either black, red, or a neat blue.. but I'm not sure what I'll do yet. It's going to be filled with CANDY! I love seeing jars filled with candies. y.u.m! Isn't it pretty? I was going to take a picture of it next to something else so you could tell the size of it, but oops. It's almost as big as a gallon jug of milk.

G.A.M.E.S! Have you heard of Rack-o? I saw this at a garage sale and immediately it brought back memories of sitting in my dorm room at college and playing this with my girlfriends. Good times. It was a buck so I bought it. Rate your Mate came from the thrift store for .50 cents. It's filled with lots of questions regarding your spouse. We've already played this one with friends and had some laughs. I'm married to a game-aholic so having lots of games in our home is a great thing!

Glue gun for .50 cents at a garage sale! I already had one, but it's close to junk since it was like 3 bucks at walmart. Maybe this one will work better! It came with glue sticks too! Okay, so I just HAVE to tell this story!! So I'm expressing my excited to my friend Kayla about this little glue gun, and I'm holding it and talking about it before actually deciding to buy it... The lady in charge of this garage sale shouts over to me from across the garage with other shoppers walking around, "It has to be plugged in for it to work!" .. said in like a "you're dumb" voice!! WHAT?!?! It  has to be plugged in??? Forget it! I don't want it then!! Of course, me being the person I am made fun of her the rest of the day!.. I know, that's not very Christian like, but it was fun.

Do you like'em? $2.50 at garage sale. Can't wait to wear them! And the natural response from my husband after showing him, "More shoes?" {ha ha} He did say he likes them though. Doesn't he know by now I get all these cute things to wear to be cute for him??? But a cute pair of shoes makes ME feel good too!

Picture frame from thrift shop. .75 cents. Yeah for me! I'm in the middle of doing a little project with it.

I fell in love. Isn't she a cutie? I think it was like .50 cents at a garage sale.
It almost matches another one I found a couple months ago...

... this one
Love it! This was $3 at a Salvation Army store. When I go back home to our sweet little apartment I'll have to find a good place for them.

NO I did not pay money for this hideous jean purse! We came to a garage sale where the people were getting desperate to get rid of things. The lady practically threw this thing at me and said, "take it!" {ha ha} So I thought, hey why not? I know, it's ugly, but I think I could make it cute. Let me know if you got any ideas! I think fabric rosettes are super adorable! So I might do something with those on it.

Found this adorable shirt at the thrift shop for $2. L.O.V.E it! It makes me so happy and excited when I find super cute clothes at thrift stores! The orange-ish peachy color is something I didn't have before. Oh, and excuse the wrinkles. I wore it to church and then it ended up on my floor.. bad habit. I must break it!

.. Another $2 shirt from there

Just a little candle holder. Those are my rings in it. Check out what I'm going to do with it here.

Ahhh, and here's my favorite. I've been wanting some popsicle molds for awhile now. When I was a kid mom had the Tupperwear popsicle molds and we loved them! These aren't Tupperwear, but they work just fine! There's actually three trays. I washed them up and made some grape koolaid popsicles.

... Aren't they just so cute?!

These are two of Kayla's kids enjoying a popsicle.
Y.U.M

That's it for my fun finds!
